Convenings

In January 2007, nearly 50 individuals associated with the four Engaged Institutions grantees—including faculty members, community advocates, students, liaisons, campus administrators, and evaluators—came together in Austin, Texas to meet each other, exchange information, and partake in a "learning network" of people and institutions that care about university-community engagement. The themes of the gathering were community capacity building, program and policy impact, and institutional change.

A second convening took place in October of 2008 in New Mexico, after a second round of site visits and interviews by the PolicyLink team. Common trends that were brought to light during the second round included:

  • All four universities made measurable progress from 2005 to 2008 in creating the supports for faculty members to undertake "engaged scholarship."
  • All schools had raised the general visibility of engagement activities within the campus.
  • All of the grantee projects had become significantly more interconnected with other campus engagement units than they were at the start of the grant.
