- The Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH) conference, "Creating the Future We Want to Be: Transformation through Partnerships," will take place on May 12-15, 2010 in Portland, Oregon. Proposals for for a session or poster presentation are due Friday October 16, 2009. (9/10/09)
- Morehead State University's new Center for Regional Engagement puts a greater focus on the relationships between the campus and the surrounding communities. - The Arizona Board of Regents recently discussed models from The University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University to dramatically increase the number of undergraduate degrees produced throughout the state - making undergraduate degrees faster, less expensive and easier to access for students. - New communiversities, experimental campuses that offers a combination of community college and university programs, are opening in Arizona. - The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities' 15th Annual Conference, Building Community Resiliency: The Role of University Leadership will take place in Philadelphia, on October 11-13, 2009. - The Coalition of Urban Serving Universities and NASULGC’s Commission on the Urban Agenda announce the 4th Annual Summer Meeting to be held in Washington, DC,

- The Community-Campus Partnerships for Health's 12th Summer Service-Learning Institute on July 24-27, 2009, is taught by national experts in service-learning, including health professional faculty and community leaders who have developed successful service-learning partnerships targeted at both novice and experienced service-learning practitioners. - Macon, GA will take a major step toward revitalizing College Hill with a new $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The grant will support the Community Foundation of Central Georgia and Mercer University to form the College Hill Alliance both designed to reshape the city’s first neighborhoods into a vibrant college town connected by leafy roads and bike paths to the city’s downtown. - A shopping center building on Minneapolis’ North Side is currently being transformed into a University of Minnesota community outreach facility that officials predict will be open for business this fall, the Urban Research and Outreach/Engagement Center (UROC). - School officials in Texas are hoping to make it easier for students to transfer from community colleges to four-year institutions.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that about 1,000 college and university representatives attended meetings across the state to discuss improving transfer rates at the Transfer Success Conference. Read More. (6/15/09)
- An article in The Chronicle of Higher Education, "In Texas, Transfer Students Get an Extra Pat on the Back" outlines two statewide programs in Texas — one aimed at college employees and the other at students and their families to increase the numbers of students who make successful transfers from two-year to four-year higher education. - Victor Rubin, Vice President for Research at PolicyLink recently contributed to a chapter in a new book out of the Penn Institute for Urban Research, Retooling HUD for a Catalytic Federal Government. The Chapter, titled "Anchor Institutions as Partners in Building Successful Communities and Local Economies" focuses on the importance of anchor institutions to local economies, HUD potential role in fully tapping into these resources. - The El Paso Times reports that the University of Texas at El Paso and six other schools seeking elite status as national research universities could get hundreds of millions in state dollars to chase that goal under a bill the Texas House approved Friday. (4/24/09)
- USA Today reported on the trend of new scholarships that aid students committed to service. The federal work-study program now requires schools to use 7% of their funds paying students for community service work. But more schools are now putting up some of their own aid dollars. Read More. 2008
- University of Iowa (UI) launched a new program this semester called Pick One! requiring first-year students to choose at least one activity to get involved in during their first semester. UI has developed 49 new service learning courses; 1,200 students have accumulated 28,000 service learning hours. Read More. (added 10/14/08)
- In exchange for $4,000, freshman in the Imagine College program sign a pledge to graduate in 4 years with at least a 2.5 grade-point average. Sponsored by UC Santa Cruz,
Monterey Peninsula Foundation, and Cal State Monterey Bay,

- California State University, Fresno provided 667,836 hours of community service during the 2007-08 academic year. Totals released today by the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning at Fresno State set the economic impact of the University’s service efforts at an estimated $15.9 million. - Sixteen South Carolina higher education institutions have joined together to form South Carolina Campus Compact, part of a national coalition that is committed to educating the next generation of responsible citizens through civic engagement, service-learning, and community service. - The State University of New York at New Paltz has created a new Center for Research, Regional Education and Outreach (CRREO) on the New Paltz campus, which will serve as the principal locus of the college’s efforts to raise its level of engagement within communities, government and businesses across the Hudson Valley. - University of Kentucky has recently established the Center for the Study of Violence Against Children in the College of Social Work as "a model for effective university-community engagement and a catalyst for establishing the University of Kentucky as a leader in the areas of research and practice as it relates to violence against children." - Penn State has published the "Future of the American Public Research University," this month which originated from and has been edited by leaders from The Pennsylvania State University. In 12 chapters, leaders from several universities and higher-ed organizing bodies offered perspectives on a range of topics, particularly Chapter 2, "Expert and Elite: The Incongruous Mission of Public Research Universities" by R.
