- California State University, Fresno provided 667,836 hours of community service during the 2007-08 academic year. Totals released today by the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning at Fresno State set the economic impact of the University’s service efforts at an estimated $15.9 million. - The University at Buffalo East Side Neighborhood Transformation Partnership (ESNTP), a university-assisted approach to the regeneration of Buffalo's Fruit Belt and Martin Luther King, Jr., Park communities, has received the 2008 Outstanding Program Award from the international Community Development Society. - Purdue researchers have begun a new program called Purdue Liberal Arts Community Engagement, or PLACE, to talk to community leaders on research and projects they have been doing related to immigration and diverse communities. (Added 10.16.07)
- Sixteen South Carolina higher education institutions have joined together to form South Carolina Campus Compact, part of a national coalition that is committed to educating the next generation of responsible citizens through civic engagement, service-learning, and community service. - The State University of New York at New Paltz has created a new Center for Research, Regional Education and Outreach (CRREO) on the New Paltz campus, which will serve as the principal locus of the college’s efforts to raise its level of engagement within communities, government and businesses across the Hudson Valley. - University of Kentucky has recently established the Center for the Study of Violence Against Children in the College of Social Work as "a model for effective university-community engagement and a catalyst for establishing the University of Kentucky as a leader in the areas of research and practice as it relates to violence against children." - Penn State has published the "Future of the American Public Research University," this month which originated from and has been edited by leaders from The Pennsylvania State University. In 12 chapters, leaders from several universities and higher-ed organizing bodies offered perspectives on a range of topics, particularly Chapter 2, "Expert and Elite: The Incongruous Mission of Public Research Universities" by R. Geiger, and Chapter 8, "Service and Outreach: The Public’s Opportunities and Obligations" by J. Ramaley. (Added 8.29.07)
