FOCUS seeks to further embed community engagement into the research activities of the University. Strategies include:
  1. Developing and disseminating a method of conducting research that combines scholarly research and community engagement. The FOCUS project will show other Penn State faculty members how they can do research in a way that benefits themselves as scientists while benefiting communities.
  2. Testing ways of integrating the University's Outreach divisions into the conduct of research. A team of members from different segments of the Outreach division is working to develop ways of using their expertise in instructional design, market research, and other outreach components to improve the FOCUS intervention and its sustainability.
