The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities is one of the nation's premier public universities. Like Penn State, it is a state land-grant university, with a strong tradition of education and public service, and a top-notch research institution, with faculty of national and international reputation. The University's community engagement activities are quite diffuse and decentralized, with many partnerships and service learning activities occurring within the colleges.
The Minnesota Youth Community Learning Initiative seeks to increase youth and engagement in learning and school in seven diverse Minnesota communities: Worthington, Mapleton, Faribault, North Minneapolis, McGregor, Cass Lake, and Fergus Falls. In each community, an existing multi-sector community coalition partners with the University to develop and implement a youth mentoring program. This program sets up mentoring relationships between at-risk youth and "community teachers" with whom they share common interests. Through the implementation of the mentoring programs, MYCL aims to build community capacity to engage in youth development issues.
The MYCL Initiative is hosted by the Konopka Institute for Best Practices in Adolescent Health, an institute founded to disseminate healthy youth development strategies. The Institute supports the community partnerships through training, technical assistance, and communications activities.
